Plain-English definitions for the terminology used across Pitch Notes.
- Accumulator
- A type of parlay where multiple selections are linked together, and winnings roll over from one to the next.
- Arbitrage Betting
- Placing bets on all possible outcomes of an event across different bookmakers to guarantee a profit regardless of result.
- Asian Handicap
- A spread betting system that eliminates the draw by giving a handicap to each team, expressed in whole or half goals.
- Bankroll
- The total amount of money a bettor sets aside for placing bets.
- Bet Builder
- A feature that lets you combine multiple markets from the same event into a single custom bet.
- Betting Exchange
- A platform where bettors can back and lay outcomes against each other, acting as a marketplace.
- Bookmaker
- A company or person that sets odds and accepts bets.
- Both Teams To Score
- A market where you bet on whether each side will score at least one goal during the match.
- Cash Out
- The option to settle a bet early for a reduced payout, based on the current state of the wager.
- Double Chance
- A bet that covers two of the three possible outcomes in a match, increasing your chance to win.
- Draw No Bet
- A bet that returns your stake if the match ends in a draw, otherwise you win if your chosen team wins.
- Half-Time/Full-Time
- A bet that predicts both the result at half‑time and the final result of the match.
- In-Play Betting
- Placing bets after an event has started, with odds that update as the action unfolds.
- Lay Betting
- Betting that a specific outcome will not happen, essentially acting as the bookmaker on an exchange.
- Margin
- The built‑in profit margin a bookmaker includes in the odds, also called juice or vig.
- Matched Betting
- A technique that uses free bets and promotions to create risk‑free profits by covering all outcomes.
- Moneyline
- A bet on which team will win the match, with odds expressed as a positive or negative number.
- Odds
- The number that tells you how much you can win relative to your stake, based on how likely an outcome is thought to be.
- Over/Under
- A bet on whether the total number of goals or points in a match will be higher or lower than a set figure.
- Parlay
- A single bet that combines two or more selections, and all must win for the bet to pay out.
- Point Spread
- A handicap given to a team to make the betting odds even, often shown as a number of goals or points.
- Single Bet
- A straightforward wager on one outcome, with a win determined solely by that result.
- Stake
- The amount of money you risk on a single bet.
- Unit
- A standardized amount of your bankroll used to measure the size of your bets.
- Value Bet
- A wager where the odds offered are higher than the true probability of the outcome, giving an expected positive return.
